"It is good to give thanks"

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to Your Name, O Most High", we sing in a Hebrew Psalm often quoted on Thanksgiving. But why is this Psalm ( or any for that matter?) so necessary to recite on Thanksgiving or any other time? Does God need flattery? Mortal rulers might, and often do. But if God is beyond all that, having created us all, perhaps the reason to give is that WE need to recognize God's greatness and give thanks in our own hearts for what we have, and try to help others in whatever way  we can. My way of helping is to donate 10% of my yearly profits to causes I care about. So when you purchase a kippah, you are not just  celebrating a B Mitzvah, wedding, or other simcha, or hiddur mitzvah, beautifying a commandment  to acknowledge the Creator, you are giving to causes which feed the hungry and promote peace between all residents of the Holy Land.
