"Better to light a candle..."

There is a saying that translates into,

"Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness."

I think of this saying when Hanukkah rolls around, and more so this year. Fire can warm, it can also be destructive, literally inflammatory. Yet, it can draw people together to celebrate, to feel safe and loved and seen. As the song, "Light One Candle" by Peter Yarrow, asks us, "What is the memory that's valued so highly, that we keep alive in that flame?" Another verse shone bright for me this year: "Light one candle for the strength that we need to never become our own foe..." speaking to the duality of  being "fired up" for a cause.

As we light the Hanukkah candles, increasing the light each night, may we pledge to act in a way that brings more light into the world.
