Leah gets a bad rap in the Torah. Although she is honored as one of the Four Mothers, she is praised for her ability to make babies, but not much else. She is shown as fiercely competitive with her sister, jealous, ambitious and determined. Wait a minute: why are those seen as entirely bad? Could it be because it was considered "unseemly" for a woman to display ambition and determination? Those very same qualities are praised and honored in business: perhaps we can view Leah as a productive, imaginative business woman of her time- as she is portrayed in The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, for example. I mean, what a come on, "Surely, I have purchased you with my son's mandrakes:) And in order to feed all those hungry mouths, she HAD to be good at managing her household!
